Best in Cultural Costume 2010 Angela D. Fernando from the Municipality of Lubao, Pampanga For the first seven years, Carousel Productions has focused its search on regional pageants and the Filipino community abroad, but in 2008, Carousel expanded its search by soliciting the active participation of municipalities and cities. From then on, a representative from each municipality or city has been sent to the Miss Philippines-Earth every year to promote not only the area’s own environmental advocacy but also its tourist spots and attractions.

Now on its 10th year, the Miss Philippines-Earth Beauty Pageant continues to spread its advocacy through this year’s theme: Water Conservation and Preservation. Carousel Productions Inc. created Miss Philippines-Earth with the goal of marrying beauty and substance. During its first six years, the focus of Miss Philippines-Earth was to spread consciousness on the worsening deterioration of our environment. On its seventh year, the Miss Earth Foundation launched the “I Love My Planet Earth” school tour, where the winners spend their reign visiting different public and private schools all over the Philippines to educate the children on their adopted advocacy.

Miss Philippines-Earth: Making Waves on its 10th year

Tuesday, April 6, at Lo-ok, Manila Ocean Park, the 52 beautiful and cause-oriented ladies of Miss Philippines-Earth 2010 will be presented for the first time before the media. The 2010 candidates represent different municipalities from all over the Philippines, including the following Filipino communities abroad: France, U.S. East Coast and U.S. West Coast. While last year’s candidates promoted the “green lifestyle,” this year’s candidates will promote “water conservation and preservation” in response to the problem of El Niño.

Now, on its 10th year, Carousel Productions Inc. is proud to say that what Miss Philippines-Earth has accomplished over the years has exceeded everybody’s expectations. According to Carousel President, Ramon Monzon, “What these girls do is really admirable. They are serious in their tree-planting activities, active in coastal clean-ups, eager to open the eyes of children to environmental issues, while at the same time, they continuously maintain the poise and stature of a beauty queen.”

Recognizing the lack of an appropriate medium to simplify the teaching of environmental issues to children, the Miss Philippines-Earth 2006 winners, under the leadership of Catherine Untalan, collectively wrote a children’s book entitled BAKAWAN which was published by Adarna and eventually became part of McDonald’s House of Charities and the Department of Education’s “Bright Minds Read” program. This served as their batch’s legacy which became a model for subsequent batches to emulate in their own way. The 2007 batch, under the leadership of Jeanne Harn, produced reusable bags made from katya at the height of the campaign against the use of plastics while the 2008 batch, under the leadership of.Karla Paula Henry, embarked on the challenge of planting 20,000 trees all over the Philippines. Last year’s batch, under the leadership of Sandra Seifert, produced a movie called “Project Noel” which discussed the importance of recycling one’s trash and which had its premiere last March 24 at The Podium Mall. “I have been observing how each batch of reigning queens strive to bring their respective projects to life since 2006. I must say that I am very impressed with the previous winners and am looking forward to the legacy of this year’s batch,” stated Carousel Productions Inc. Executive Vice-President, Lorraine Schuck.
